Life is short. We all know it. We even remind others of it. Then we go forward and operate as if we are oblivious to this fact. Then someone we know suddenly dies. That's when the real reminder occurs: Life can end any day, at any moment for us. It's a given, but it should be a game-changer in our approach to how we use our precious time.
Time, or rather the best utilization of it, is at the crux of what makes our time on earth worthwhile by providing a sense of purpose. Positive psychology teaches us that the activation of our superpowers is of tantamount importance to that goal. Superpowers only get activated upon use. They vary and we all have them. They can be a natural talent, a personal strength, an uncanny ability, a developed skill, acquired resources, influence, or any combination thereof.
Just as we all have superpowers, we all have the time (albeit limited) to activate them. But too many of us don't. Even more of us confuse or replace them with core competencies - which are fine for making a living or making others rich, but not necessarily for living richly.
Life's clock ticks constantly. Unfortunately, it also ticks quietly; until the death of others trigger the alarm that causes us to pay attention to how fleeting our time on earth really is. Yes, even death can't awaken all of us to the dual reality that our time and superpowers are gifts and riches not to be undervalued or squandered, but honored daily.
Our time was meant to be invested, and our superpowers to be celebrated. Life represents the one and only opportunity to share these riches through the pursuit of our dreams. They are not for possession. When activated these superpowers enrich and impact lives. When ignored they are inevitably taken with us to the grave, making graveyards the richest places on earth.
