Succeeding in the workplace has its challenges, especially when success is ill-defined. That scenario is omnipresent; therefore the first step is to have honest, detailed, goal oriented conversations about what success is, and what the manifestation of that success looks like with supervisors, managers, and executives.
Those discussions inevitably reveal the problems that any organization is dedicated to solving. In the middle of the problems and solutions is you. This is where you fit into the equation. Sounds simple, right? For many it's not so simple because the equation is not recognized. Once embraced, you can become a key player.
In order to be a major contributor to the success of any organization, you must first understand its purpose and function. Too often that's not made clear to the employee, or the employee fails to comprehend it. Either way, the result is the same: failure to see the equation in which the employee = contributor + employer = valuable solution provider.
Employees are hired, retained, and promoted based on this equation. They are also terminated because of it. The only thing greater than a smart employee is a committed star employee who recognizes this equation and diligently works to optimize the functionality of it.
